NKCAC provides support and services to victims of child abuse and their non-offending family members or caregivers in a child-friendly environment that ensures a child*s safety, health and well-being. * Child-friendly Environment NKCAC provides a comfortable child-friendly setting that is both physically and psychologically safe of the child * Forensic Interviews Forensic Interviews are conducted at the center by a trained forensic interviewer, employed by NKCAC. The interviewers is special trained to talk and interact with children while assessing their developmental level and gatherings legally sound facts regarding the abuse allegations. * Mental Health Services Professional counseling may be necessary to the child's recovery. NKCAC may refer you child to a mental health therapist at the earliest opportunity to further the healing process. * Specialized Child Abuse Medical Examinations NKCAC specially trained physicians provide comprehensive medical examinations on site to ensure a child is healthy and without injury. Specialized medical equipment provides physicians with the ability to evaluate the child's body in a non-invasive manner and collect and document evidence of abuse whenever necessary. * Advocacy NKCAC Family Advocates provide support, information, education, crisis counseling and assistance with completing Crime Victim Compensation applications. * Multidisciplinary Team Investigation NKCAC assist the multidisciplinary team of: law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical and victim advocates in working together and making team decisions, about the investigation, treatment, management and prosecution of child abuse cases. * Public and Professional Education NKCAC is dedicated to providing support and training to meet the needs of staff, professionals and the general public on topics related to child abuse.

Adult Mental Health Services and Programs
- Outpatient therapy: individual, couple, family, and group
- Therapists include psychologists and social workers trained in individual, children and family counseling. Help is available with communications, parenting issues, problem behaviors, response to trauma, and more. Clinicians help to identify problems and workable solutions.
- Case Management
- Case Management assists individuals in accessing needed services in the community. A case manager evaluates the client’s needs, and then helps develop a specific treatment plan. Guided by their needs and goals, the case manager links the individual with services in the community, and then monitors the quality of those services.
- Medication therapy and assessment
- A staff psychiatrist or Advanced Registered Nurse Practioner (ARNP) assesses medication therapy needs and/or adjustments.
- Assessment Services
- A staff of highly trained professionals provide thorough personality, intelligence, educational, court and parenting evaluations.
- Employment Rehabilitation Program
- Provides personalized training in work readiness, good work habits, positive attitude, flexibility and problem solving skills, conflict resolution, as well as on the job assistance, ongoing monitoring and support services.
- Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program
NORTHKEY (CONT’D)
- Therapeutic Rehabilitation is a goal-oriented program for individuals with serious, long-term mental illnesses. It emphasizes skill building within a supportive environment. Objectives for clients in the program include: learning and maintaining activities of daily living; improving communication, expressive and social skills; developing skills needed to use community resources and support services; gaining understanding of mental illness and how to live satisfying lives within illness limitations; learning decision-making skills to enhance quality of life; increasing sense of identity and self-esteem and preparing for employment by improving job readiness skills.
- Program to Assist with Transition from Homelessness (PATH)
- A point of entry program for homeless individuals with mental illness. Services include: homeless outreach, assessment, medication, case management, psychotherapy, referral for housing application and supported employment services and limited wrap-around funds to help with payment for medications.
- Elderly Outreach
- Provides in-home assessment, medication review and supportive counseling to persons 60 and over living primarily in Boone, Kenton or Campbell Counties, with new or existing mental health concerns or illnesses.
- Rental Assistance Program
- Provides assistance with rent to those who meet income eligibility. It is not necessary to receive NorthKey services to apply. Anyone with pending legal charges or currently registers sex offenders are not eligible. Specific qualifiers may apply. All participants must agree to in-home visits.
- Crisis Stabilization Services
- The program provides quick access to a therapist or case manager to any adult resident in NorthKey’s eight county area experiencing a crisis situation that is overwhelming his or her usual coping ability. Services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Children’s Mental Health Services and Programs
- Children’s Intensive Services
- Inpatient treatment for children preschool to 17 years old offering: individual and family therapy; psychiatric/psychological assessments and treatment; art and activity therapy; year-round accredited school program aftercare coordination; partial hospitalization program; behavior management; group therapy; specialized treatment and pediatric medical care.
- Children’s Crisis Stabilization Program
- Short-term intensive therapy as a way of preventing needless hospitalizations. The program includes a mobile crisis unit, which will meet a child and his or her caregiver at a safe location in any of NorthKey’s eight county service areas within three to 24 hours of the initial call. The crisis clinician conducts an assessment to determine the needs of the child.
Children’s Mental Health Services and Programs
- Partial Hospitalization Program
- Short-term, intensive therapy, day program for children and adolescents 4-17 as a step down from inpatient care of as a preventive step to reduce or eliminate the
need for inpatient care. The program provides groups, individual therapy, family therapy, collateral therapy, TR and psychiatric services. Time is also set aside
for working on schoolwork that is provided by the schools. In addition, therapists help with setting up ongoing support services and any needed transitions back into a school setting. Transportation can be provided within a certain distance from the program.

Children and Family Mental Health Services and Programs
- Individual and family outpatient therapy
- Outpatient counseling and therapy services for individual and family treatment. Clinicians work with children and their families to identify problems and work on solutions as separate individuals and a family unit. Help is available for communication, parenting issues, problem behaviors, responses to trauma and more.
- Medication assessment
- Outpatient psychiatric services are available for both diagnosis and medication management.
- Early Childhood Mental Health Program
- Run by an early childhood mental health specialist, this program provides mental health assessment and therapeutic services to children age birth to 5 and their families; and mental health consultation to early childhood programs, such as daycares.
- IMPACT Program
- Intensive case management for children with severe emotional disorders. The child must be under 18 and have a diagnosed psychiatric disorder. Clients can also have an accompanying diagnosis of chemical dependency, mental retardation or organic brain disorder, but the primary diagnosis must be psychiatric.
- Parent Child Interaction Therapy
- A 14 session, play-based parent training program that teaches specific behavior management techniques when caring for children ages 2 to 12 with the following behavior problems: refuse/defy adult requests; lose temper easily; annoy others on purpose; steal things; destroy things; start fights/hurt others; have difficulty staying seated, playing quietly or taking turns.
- Kentuckians Encouraging Youth to Succeed Program (KEYS)
- Identifies and treats children with mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, and their families, using a multi-agency, community system partnership approach, while promoting prevention and awareness.
- School-based Services
- Provides counseling to children in school settings. Teachers or parents refer students whose behaviors or emotional difficulties impede academic success or disrupt the classroom. Participating school have a dedicated, licensed mental health professional that is part of a collaborative teacher, counselor and parent team.
- Function Family Therapy (FFT)
- Provides FFT to adolescents involved in the juvenile justice system, and their families. Helps families to identify issues and gives them the tools needed to resolve them. FFT consists of eight to twelve sessions with a licensed FFT therapist.
Substance Abuse Services and Programs
- Individual and Family Therapy
- Provides screening, information, referral and outpatient treatment services for all types of substance abuse.
- Psychiatric Services and Medication Management
- If substance abuse and mental health issues are co-occurring, it is possible that effective treatment will involve the use of psychiatric medication. Psychiatric evaluations are available to determine if medication therapy is appropriate.
- Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
- An intensive program for adolescents with serious alcohol or drug problems. A one year, Alcoholics Anonymous-based program with a success rate about the national average. Components of the program include: pre-treatment

assessment, parental involvement, random drug screenings, case management and aftercare.
- Women’s Intensive Outpatient Program
- This program addresses the specific needs of women in recovery from substance abuse. Key components of the program include: education, recreation, anger management, group and individual therapy and aftercare.
- Children’s Education and Support Group
- For children 6 to 12 years old who have a parent, guardian or significant adult in their life recovering from substance abuse. Information is specifically geared to children so they can understand the disease, how it has affected their life and how they can recover along with the recovering adult.
- Adult Education and Support Group
- For anyone 12 years and older who has a family member, friend or significant person in their life recovering from substance abuse.
- Regional Prevention Center
- Offers a variety of services to the community to prevent substance abuse in children and adults. Services include:
- Zero tolerance programs for DUI offenders
- A resource and video library
- Education on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
- Trainings for schools, universities and the workplace on the effects of negative substance abuse decisions
- Outreach to alcohol vendors and restaurants
- Organized youth advocacy
Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities (MRDD) Adult Services and Program
- Staffed Residence
- Trained staff provide care to individuals with disabilities in residences owned and operated by NorthKey, located throughout the eight county region.
- Adult Foster Care Homes
- Residents of the community invite a person with a disability to live in their homes as part of their family. The person with the disability usually requires some level of care. Adult foster care providers are paid by the state.
- Scheduled Respite Care
- Paraprofessionals provide care to an individual with a disability so primary caregivers can have a short break.
- Support Coordination
- Support coordinators work with individuals, their families and/or guardians to help write and carry out a Support Plan for the individual. (Otherwise known as case management.)
- Counseling and Therapy
- Individual, family and/or group counseling are available. The approach is tailored to the individual needs of the client or family.
- Supports For Community Living
- A Medicaid waiver program where individuals selected from a statewide waiting list are provided with the needed support services to live as independently as possible in the community of their choice.
- Vocational Training, Production and Social Skills Programs and Supported Employment
- Community Habilitation Programs provide individuals with disabilities production work experience that can lead to job placement in the community. NorthKey maintains several workshops and two greenhouses, and contracts with companies and organizations in the community to provide this training. Along with the training, participants also build social skills as they interact with fellow participants and staff.

- First Steps
- An early intervention program for children from birth to three years old, First Steps provides services to infants and toddlers who are at high risk for future developmental delays. An example of high risk is Down Syndrome.
- IMPACT Plus
- Therapeutic services provided to preschool and school age children who are Medicaid eligible and have a developmental disability that co-exists with a sever mental illness.
