Level 1 – Travel Advisory
Snow may be blowing or drifting across roads, and roads may be icy. Drivers should use extra caution and slow down.
Level 2 – Restricted Travel
Roads are very hazardous. Roadways are covered with snow and/or ice and snow may be blowing and drifting. Only drivers whose travel is absolutely necessary should be on the roadways. Residents should contact their employer to see if they need to report to work. County officials are requesting that travel in Pendleton County be limited to essential travel or emergency vehicles only.
Level 3 – Emergency Only
Roads are extremely hazardous. Travel is limited to emergency workers, people going to and from work, people getting food and other supplies, people getting medical supplies or treatment, and private snow removal operations. Only essential travel should happen. Drivers who ignore these rules may be charged with a crime. Residents should contact their employer about work schedules.
DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY
The decision to declare any of the above levels is a difficult one. Remember, it’s impossible to know the condition of every road in the county. These are only guidelines for the majority of roads. If, for example, a Level 1 Snow Emergency is in effect, there may be secondary roads that could be hazardous enough to be rated at Level 2 or 3.
If there is snow present, you should always assume that the road ahead is worse than the stretch of road you are currently on. In short, drive with extra regard for your speed and those around you especially on curves, hills, and the bridges which usually freeze well before the rest of the roadway. Also give yourself PLENTY of stopping distance especially on icy roads.
